America France Statue of Liberty Reimagined pendant
Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame,
“Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!” cries she
With silent lips. “Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore,
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”
in 1865, inspired by the American Civil War, two Frenchmen devised a plan to build a monument celebrating the two countries' shared desire for freedom. France would go on to its own war, putting off the construction of the Statue of Liberty until 1871. The first portion - Lady Liberty's torch bearing arm - was completed in 1876 to great excitement and was displayed in 1876 at Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia and again in Madison Square Park, Manhattan from 1876 – 1882. In what may have been the earliest instance of crowdsourcing, the funds needed to build the pedestal were raised with 120,000 people contributing, most of whom who paid less than a dollar. When the statue was finally opened to the public in 1886, 21 years after it was conceived, New York celebrated with the first of many ticker tape parades.
